Programmes 2006
JANUARY 21st 'Blackout' (GB 1950) is this evening's
feature. An interesting low-budget mystery thriller starring Maxwell
Reed and Dinah Sheridan. It is a Robert S. Baker and Monty Berman
production. Also to be seen are Patrick Doonan, Eric Pohlmann, Michael
Brennan and Kynaston Reeves. Plus some supporting shorts, presented by
Graham Hobbs on 16mm.
FEBRUARY 4th Herbert Lorn stars in tonight's main film
'Dual Alibi' (GB 1947). A sprightly circus thriller supported by Ronald
Frankau, Eugene Deckers, Abraham Sofaer and Harold Berens. A British
National production distributed by Pathe. Supporting material will
complete the programme presented by Graham Sinden on 16mm.
FEBRUARY 18th 'She Couldn't Take It' (US 1935) is the
title of this evening's feature. Starring George Raft it is a little
known crazy comedy with touches of melodrama. The supporting cast
includes Joan Bennett, Wallace Ford, Billy Burke and Lloyd Nolan. Plus
a short or two and presented on 16mm by Sebastian Wheen.
MARCH 4th A full programme of 9.5mm optical sound
presented by Graham Murray. The short feature 'The Flaw' (GB 1933) will
be included. Released by Paramount it is a quota quickie and was edited
by David Lean in the early years of his career. Henry Kendall is the
star in this drama with Eric Maturin, Phyllis Clare and Eve Gray.
Several Pathescope shorts will complete the selection. Graham will
conclude the evening by screening his own prize winning film 'Piers of
Pleasure' for those who missed it at Harpenden.
MARCH 18th The highly rated British second feature
thriller 'Little Red Monkey' (1954) is tonight's main entertainment
Directed by Ken Hughes with a cast headed by Richard Conte, Rona
Anderson and Russell Napier along with Colin Gordon, Arnold Marie, Noel
Johnson, Colin Tapley and John Horsley. Also some shorts presented by
Malcolm Cutmore and Tony Saffrey on 16mm.
APRIL 1st The Group 9.5 Annual General Meeting. This
will be followed by a selection of interesting short films.
APRIL 22nd StGabriel's Annual Spring Fair. The doors
open at 11.00am. Only £1 on the door, many dealers plus the bring
and buy. Light refreshments will be on sale, non members welcome.
MAY 6th A full programme of 9.5mm optical sound
presented by Grahame Newnham from his extensive collection. The feature
is the 6 reel 'Passing Shadows'(GB 1934) a British Lion production
starring Edmund Gwenn, Barry Mackay and Aileen Marson with Wally Patch
and Viola Lye!. A murder mystery directed by Laslie Hiscott who was
responsible for many quota quickies and was very skilful at speedy and
efficient film making. A selection of shorts will complete the show.
MAY 20th 'The Twenty Questions Murder Mystery'(GB 1949) is tonight's main film. A polished light murder mystery using the popular radio quiz of the day as its background. It features Robert Beatty, Rona Anderson and Clifford Evans with Wally Patch, Kynaston Reeves, John Salew, Richard Dimbleby, Jack Train and many others. Supporting shorts will also be included, presented by David Wyatt on 16mm.
JUNE 3rd Another rare British feature makes up this evening's programme, it is screened for us by Graham Hobbs from his unique collection. Made in 1955 'Murder By Proxy' is a thriller directed by Terence Fisher. To avoid any confusion this was titled 'Blackout' for the US market The cast is headed by Dane Clark, Andrew Osborn, Betty Ann Davies and Belinda Lee. Also to be seen are Eleanor Summerfield, Alfie Bass, Delphi Lawrence, Harold Lang, Cleo Laine, along with other familiar faces of the period. It is a Hammer film made shortly before their successful move to the horror category. Short films will also be included, all on 16mm.
JUNE 17th St Gabriel's Annual Auction. All items will be welcomed, but must be cine related. The normal 1 0% will be deducted for group funds. The evening will conclude with some interesting short films as time will allow.
JULY 1st 'Little Big Shot'(GB 1952) is tonight's
feature, a knockabout comedy starring Ronald Shiner and ably assisted
by Derek Farr, Marie Lohr, Danny Green, Yvette Wyatt and Digby Wolfe.
It was directed by Jack Raymond from a screenplay by John Paddy
Carstairs. Some short films will also be shown. Presented by Graham
Murray and Alexander Gleason, all on 16mm.
JULY 15th Please bring along
a
special film of your own choice. Projection equipment will be available
for 16 and 9.5mm. If on an alternative gauge, then please provide your
own equipment. An interesting evening of mixed material should be
guaranteed.
JULY 29th A complete programme
on 35mm presented for us by Graham Hobbs and Tony Saffrey. 'Dick Barton
- Special Agent' (GB 1948) is the feature and stars Don Stannard
in the title role. A further episode of the serial 'Five Clues to
Fortune' (GB 1957) with David Hemmings will also be included.
We now have our short summer break and will recommence as follows.
SEPTEMBER 9th St.Gabriel's
Annual General Meeting. This will be followed by a selection of
9.5mm optical sound. The feature will be 'Night Alarm' (US 1934)
starring Bruce Cabot, H.B.Warner and Judith Allen. A low budget crime
drama directed by Spencer Bennett. Presented for us by Graham
Murray.
SEPTEMBER 23rd 'Crime Over
London' (GB 1936) is tonight's main film. A rarely seen gangster
picture featuring Margot Graham and Basil Sydney with Googie
Withers and Danny Green. Some short titles will complete the
programme. Presented by Sebastian Wheen on 16mm.
OCTOBER 7th 'What Price
Hollywood' (US 1932) is this evening's feature. It was directed
by George Cukor and stars Constance Bennett, Neil Hamilton, Lowell
Sherman and Brooks Benedict. An early look at the life of a film city.
Relative short films will also be included. Presented by Graham Murray
from his unique collection.
OCTOBER 21st A full evening of
9.5mm printed films shown for us by Grahame Newnham. Along with
some interesting shorts will be 'The Case of Gabriel Perry' (GB
1935). A meaty drama set in 1885 with Henry Oscar, Olga Lindo,
Margaret Lockwood, Raymond Lovell and Martita Hunt. Also 'The Blue
Light', a German classic from 1932 directed by Leni Riefenstahl who
also stars. It was released by Pathéscope as a silent and
Grahame has carefully compiled accompanying music to compliment
this romantic drama.
NOVEMBER 4th A complete programme of British TV
half hour filmed episodes from the 1950's and 60's. Included is
'William Tell' with Conrad Phillips and Jennifer Jayne, 'Zero One'
featuring Nigel Patrick, 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' with Richard
Greene, Alan Wheatley and Alexander Gauge, plus others. All on 16mm and
presented for us by David Wyatt.
NOVEMBER 18th 'Carry On Sergeant' (GB 1958) is the main feature. Cast includes Bob Monkhouse, Shirley Eaton, William Hartnell, Kenneth Williams and many more. Directed by Gerald Thomas, this was the first in the long running series. Also 'The Silent Witness' (GB 1954) a Scotland Yard mystery introduced by Edgar Lusgarten with Kenneth Henry, Ann Stafford, Molly Weir, Frank Forsyth, Lloyd Lambie, Cyril Smith and others. Presented by Graham Hobbs on 16mm.
DECEMBER 2nd Douglas Fairbanks Junior stars in 'Accused' (GB 1936) a rarely seen dramatic thriller directed by Thornton Freeland in which the star also co-produced. Also features Basil Sydney, Dolores Del Rio, Florence Desmond, Googie Withers, Edward Rigby and Roland Culver. Some short films will make up the programme which is screened by Tony Saffrey on 16mm.
DECEMBER 16th St.Gabriel's Christmas social with
wine, soft drinks and a cold buffet. The evening will conclude with a
selection of comedy shorts projected for us by David Wyatt from his own
collection.
